Weight capacity is one of the most important — and most misunderstood — specifications on an electric recumbent trike. It’s not just about whether you fit on the seat. It determines structural safety at the frame welds, axle load limits, and long-term durability under repeated stress. This guide explains what the rating means, how to apply it, and which LBR model is right for your weight.

What Weight Capacity Actually Measures

The weight capacity rating is the maximum total load the frame is engineered to carry safely under repeated stress cycles. Total load = rider body weight + clothing + helmet + anything stored on or in the trike (panniers, bags, water bottles, cargo).

This number comes from engineering analysis of the frame welds, main beam cross-section, axle diameter, and wheel spoke tension under repeated dynamic loading (not just static weight). A 300 lb rated frame can carry 300 lbs in a straight line on flat pavement — but corner loads, acceleration forces, and road impacts create momentary loads that exceed static weight. This is why the engineering limit is higher than the casual “max rider weight” you might assume.

The 90% Rule: Why You Shouldn’t Ride at the Limit

90% Rule: Never plan to ride at more than 90% of the rated capacity. This leaves a 10% safety margin for dynamic loads, cargo, and frame fatigue accumulation over thousands of miles.

Frame Material and Construction

LBR frames are constructed from 6061-T6 aluminum alloy — the same alloy used in aerospace structural components and premium bicycle frames. Properties:

  • Tensile strength: 45,000 PSI — strong enough to maintain structural integrity under the combined loads of a 300 lb rider hitting a 2″ pavement bump at 15 mph.
  • Corrosion resistance: Aluminum forms a natural oxide layer that prevents rust. LBR frames carry a 10-year structural warranty because aluminum fatigue is well-characterized and predictable.
  • Weight: 6061-T6 is 65% lighter than steel at equivalent strength for this application — keeping trike weight at 68–76 lbs despite a robust frame.

Welds are TIG-welded (Tungsten Inert Gas) — the highest-quality process for aluminum bicycle frames. All weld seams undergo visual and pressure inspection before leaving the factory.

Axle Load Ratings

The rear axle carries the most load on a recumbent trike — it bears the weight of the rider (the seat is positioned directly above the rear axle on LBR models), the motor, and the battery. LBR rear axles are rated to 350 lbs on the Glide (265 lb total capacity) and 400 lbs on the Ease and Venture (300 lb total capacity). The axle rating exceeds frame capacity to ensure the axle is never the weakest link.

Does exceeding weight capacity void the warranty?

Yes. Riding consistently above the rated capacity accelerates fatigue at the frame joints and voids the 10-year frame warranty. One-time events slightly over the limit don’t cause immediate failure, but repeated overloading creates microscopic cracks in the weld heat-affected zones that grow over time. This is why we recommend staying at 90% of rated capacity — the 10% margin accounts for these occasional overload events.

Can I carry a passenger or child seat?

No. LBR trikes are rated for a single rider plus cargo — not passenger capacity. A child seat or trailer is not rated or supported. The frame, axle, and steering geometry are engineered for solo rider loads.

Does cargo location affect weight distribution?

Yes — significantly. Weight should be carried as low as possible and balanced side-to-side. Rear rack cargo (directly above the axle) is ideal. Front cargo (ahead of the seat) shifts weight to the front wheels and can affect steering feel. Never mount heavy cargo to the handlebars.
